Volunteering
Why should I volunteer? Volunteering provides many benefits to both mental and physical health. Volunteering helps counteract the effects of stress, anger, and anxiety. If you're working with others, the social contact aspect of helping can have a profound effect on your overall psychological well-being. Not to mention the opportunity to add important experience to your resume or college application.

Binky Patrol - Knit blankies for kids in need
Find info here
Binky Patrol is an organization that makes blankets and gives them away to children who are in need of comfort.
It's a reminder that these kids matter, they are not invisible, not forgotten, and that SOMEONE cares about them. This is a 100% volunteer-driven organization - all ages and skills are welcome!
If you want patterns check out our website resource or try your local library. There are TONS of patterns in great books that you can borrow. Keep this simple, don't overthink it, please.
When you have your binkies made you have a few options:
You can give your binkies to a local chapter:
Email: [email protected]
Binky Patrol, Inc.
c/o Susan Finch
6490 SW Elm Ave.
Beaverton, OR 97005
Or, you can simply take our inspiration and lead -- just make blankets and find a local area shelter or hospital or agency to give them to. You don't have to be a volunteer for Binky Patrol to do this. If you choose this option, we're glad that we inspired you and wish you well as you help to comfort the children and teens in your area.
YouthLine
YouthLine is a free teen-to-teen help, support and crisis line that operates every day from 4-10 PM PST. Teens can call, text or chat with our teen volunteers about anything that may be bothering them; including family and relationship problems, substance abuse, eating disorders, depression, suicidal thoughts, and other tough issues. Our Teen volunteers listen and support our teen callers with the guidance of Master level clinicians.
For our Volunteer Program, students must be 15-20 years old for the Peer Crisis Intervention Specialist position and able to commit to one 3.5-hour shift per week (3:45-7:15PM or 6:45-10:15PM). For students 21+, we have our Coaching Volunteer position where volunteers sign up for one 6.5-hour shift per week. We ask for a minimum of a one-year commitment from volunteers for all positions.
Our Fellowship Program is designed for young people who are marginalized by social and economic resources. Access to a program that offers support and information related to interpersonal skills, self-care and compassion, mental health awareness, adult mentorship, and community supports should be available to all. YouthLine recognizes that there are barriers inherent in the systems that exist and is striving to address some of those barriers to provide access to this program to all youth.
Eligible youth may apply to receive a stipend of $125 per month. Students must meet at least one of the following criteria: bilingual, attends a Title 1 school, qualifies for free/reduced lunch, annual household income that is at or below the poverty line, lives in a single-guardian household, lives in a rural area, or has a commute to the SW Portland Youthline office of 20+ miles. Due to limited funding, preference will be given to candidates who meet multiple criteria.
Our Internship Program includes 5 different internship opportunities. This program is for adults 18+ years old. The internship positions require a commitment of at least 6 months, with a preference for one year. Interns are under regular supervision and meet on a regular basis with their supervisor.
All interns, volunteers and Fellowship participants will also have the opportunity to join our committees. YouthLine recognizes the power and importance of youth and young adult voices. Our youth-led, staff-supported committees empower our volunteers to create meaningful community, institutional and systemic change by engaging in sociopolitical processes.
By working with us, students get to be a powerful voice of hope for other teens and young adults! All volunteers receive 63-hours of free and comprehensive training; including certification in Youth Mental Health First Aid, SafeTALK, and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), as well as ongoing personal and professional development. Working on our lines provides students a phenomenal opportunity to learn and gain experience in crisis intervention and de-escalation strategies, as well as classroom education facilitations skills. For students planning to attend or already attending post high school education, joining YouthLine can be a fantastic way to earn internship credits and/or practicum or service hours! On top of that, it looks great on resumes or graduate school applications! If you or one of your students are interested in learning more about our internship programs, please reach out to our Assistant Director of Youth Development and Training at [email protected].
Our next Volunteer Orientations are on June 7, June 9, and July 14. Please let me know if you would be willing to share this opportunity with your students or if there is someone else at your school with whom I should contact for this opportunity. If students are interested, they can text “ORVOL” to 85511, email [email protected] or check out our website at https://oregonyouthline.org to learn more!
