Steps to COMPLETING YOUR FAFSA/ORSAA
1. For FAFSA (Students who are US citizens or have Permanent Residency)
Create a FAFSA ID for student
Create a FAFSA ID for parent, if parent is a US citizen or has a Permanent Resident Card
For ORSAA (Undocumented students)
Create an OSAC account for student
Create an OSAC account for parent (done at end of application)
2. Student Demographic Data
FAFSA - Name, Address, Birthdate, Social Security Number or Alien Registration Number
ORSAA - Name, Address, Birthday, Time Lived in Oregon
3. Identify college(s) student is considering
4. Student's Dependency Status -Student is declared independent if they are: over 24 years of age, married,
provides 50% of support to a dependent child, is in the military or is a veteran, is an orphan, is homeless
In all other cases, the student will be declared a dependent of their parent.
5. Parents Demographic Data
Name, Birthdate, Date of Marriage or Divorce (if applicable)
Social Security Number (If parents are not US citizens or have a Permanent Resident Card, enter 000-00-0000)
Who are the parents for FAFSA purposes?
Parents are married & living together - report income of both parents
Parents are divorced or separated = report for parent student lives with majority of the time
Spend equal time with divorced or separated parents - report for parent who provides 1 hour more time
If parent is remarried - have to also provide step parent financial information
If student lives with other relatives (aunt, uncle, grandparents, sister, brother) = they must still report their
parents information unless there is legal documentation from a court of law showing who their guardian is.
6. Parents and Students Financial Information
2022 U.S. Tax Forms (ex. IRS Form 1040) or IRS Retrieval Tool
Assets:
Money in cash, savings, checking accounts
Real estate other than your primary home
Investments such as stock, bonds, mutual funds
Don't have to report retirement savings
Doesn't consider debt
May need to file taxes if haven't already done so
7. Sign and Submit the Application (see below)
Both Student and 1 Parent must sign

2. Click on Get Started
3. Enter Personal Information
4. Check I don’t have a Social Securtiy Nubmer” and click “continue”
5. Click “Continue without SSN”
6. Answer remaining questions through the Identity Verification section and submit Submit
You MAY be asked by email to submit the following documentation to the email provided.
Attestation form (link will be included in the email)
PLUS ONE of the following:
U.S. Driver’s license
U.S. State/City ID card
Foreign Passport
-OR-
A utility bill (with name and address matching what was entered in the FSA ID request process) PLUS ONE of the following:
Municipal ID card
Commuity ID
Consular ID car/Matricula Consular
Identity verification will be confirmed within 1-3 days by email after which the FSA ID will be created and you will be able to sign the FAFSA as a Contributor

EFC - Estimated Family Contribution
- Measure of family financial strength
- Considers your assets, family size and number of family members in college
- EFC 00000 - family expected to contribute $0 to college
- EFC 05000 - family expected to contribute $5,000 to college funds
PELL GRANT
- 2021 Maximum Pell Grant $6,495
- Family Income less than $50,000 will likely receive maximum reward
OREGON OPPORTUNITY GRANT
- Awarded first to students with the greatest financial need
- 2022-2023 maximum award amount is $3,600 at on Oregon Community College
- 2022-2023 maximum award is $4,692 for students attending an Oregon Public or Private non-profit University
- Estimated Family Contribution of $8,000 or less will most likely receive the maximum award
SUBSIDIZED STAFFORD LOAN
- Department of Education pays interest while student is in college
- Borrow $3,500, owe $3,500 at graduation
- Maximum amount 1st year dependent student is $3,500. Increases for future years
- 2022 Interest rate: 4.99%
- Loan fees (1.057%) deducted from loaned amount
UNSUBSIDIZED STAFFORD LOAN
- Interest accrues immediately and is added to debt
- Borrow $3,500, owe $3,500 + interest for each year at graduation, at 6% interest would be $4,418
- Maximum of $5,500 between Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans
- 2022 Interest rate: 6.54%
- Loan fees (1.057%) deducted from loaned amount
DIRECT/PARENT PLUS LOANS
- 2022 Interest rate: 7.54%
- Loan fees of 4.228 deducted from loaned amount
